Final Utopia (still), 2020, single-channel video with audio, 3:45

📍 Victoria, BC

To obscure the boundary between reality and fiction, I build environments and obsolete devices that incorporate video and sculpture, where viewers are invited to experience a world that is simultaneously ancient and futuristic. I am fascinated by places and objects much older than myself because they suggest the presence of another world. Through layering visible expressions of time, I reproduce the sense of deep memory that archaic machines or decaying buildings evoke, and provide access to their history or purpose through video. By projecting an old world into the distant future and merging familiarity with strangeness, I confront my longing for comfort in an uncertain future. The props and sets I build pass back and forth between physical and virtual space, linking the fictional world and the real. The efficiency of this process, as well as the accumulation of history through reuse inspires new works.
