Nature of a Painting series, 2020

📍 Abbotsford, BC

Cassidy Luteijn is a 24-year-old artist living and working on the traditional unceded lands of the Matsqui and Semá:th First Nations (Abbotsford, BC). She holds a BFA in Visual Arts from the University of Victoria. She has an active studio practice with the Abbotsford Artist Collective where she explores topics such as memory and nostalgia. Her work strikes a balance between painting and sculpture to create abstracted landscape scenes. These explorations in material aim to convey the essences of these moments in a conceptual way. The way in which she builds these landscapes is similar to how in design, a style sheet of the colour scheme represents the whole identity of the brand. These visual depictions are not only related to perspective but also the emotion of that place in time through the use of layered canvas that creates an assemblage of painted fabric. By capturing these scenes, she aims to challenge the ephemerality of these moments in nature and hold space for the memories associated with each place.
